Model United Nations Debating

September 28, 2015 | Girls’ College

This year has seen the St Stithians Girls’ College Model United Nations debaters excel and we are very proud of their outstanding achievements. Model United Nations is a form of debating that simulates sessions of the United Nations and its various organs. The focus of this style of debating is on extensive research, understanding of International Relations, correctly representing the country a team is assigned, and the ability to negotiate effectively.

A Saints Girls’ team, consisting of Gabriella Fedetto, Janai Mintah and Shumirai Sithole, progressed to the final round of the South African Institute of International Affairs Environmental Sustainability Project, placing them in the top five entered teams in Gauteng. Here they presented a research paper which compared urban regeneration projects in Johannesburg and Rio de Janeiro.

On 11 September 2015 two of our teams participated in the yearly SAIIA Model United Nations Conference, hosted by Wits University. One team, consisting of Janai Mintah, Tayla Rorich, and Shumirai Sithole, represented Bolivia in a UN General Assembly session regarding the Post-2015 Development Agenda. They performed admirably, tackling some of the most important issues in the world today. A second team, consisting of Victoria Andre, Gabriella Fedetto, and Michaela Watkins represented the People’s Republic of China in a UN Security Council session regarding the situation in Yemen. This team performed superbly and was awarded the Silver Medal for Best Delegation. We are very proud of all these ladies who engage with world issues and are proving to be strong, committed young leaders
