Interact Club - April Holiday Service Project

May 05, 2016 | Boys’ College

On the 28th and 29th of April, 14 St Stithians Boys' College boys in conjunction with JAM South Africa undertook the refurbishment of a preschool in Diepsloot named Pop Scotch. The school is run by Mama Ivy and provides early childhood development to about 30 children.

The Interact Club of 2015 and 2016 combined their fundraising efforts to completely make over this very worth centre. We contributed to the building of brand new bathroom facilities, the laying of astro turf in the playground and the complete refurbishment of the preschool. Along with this, the children at the school are fed one healthy meal every day for a year.

This project truly was a community effort as Boys’ College parents and staff donated boxes and boxes of toys, face cloths, books and toiletries. These items were generously donated and greatly appreciated by the staff at Pop Scotch.

The boys who took part loved every minute of the project. They worked exceptionally hard and took great pride in handing over the renewed school. We were able to have a party with the children to celebrate. Simba Mhere, the Top Billing presenter who passed away tragically last year was represented by his father Joseph who joined us for this project. The Pop Scotch Day Care was adopted by Simba's family in his memory and his father, along with another presenter joined in on the fun and activities of the project.

I am incredibly proud of the Grade 11 boys who participated in this project. There is no joy more rewarding than completing a project like this and without our close and continued relationship with JAM it would not have been possible.

A huge well done and thank you to all who were involved with this project.
