Botany is the focus in this term and it is important that students are well informed of the biodiversity that exists in South Africa.

The students were taught about different plant species and their uses. These plants include angiosperms, gymnosperms, indigenous, medicinal and culinary specimens. Students looked at how the plants are organised and adapted for success and reproduction. Students realised that plants were beyond being beautiful but carry heritage and culture from different nations.

It was evident that most students’ curiosity was stimulated. This was supported by many students commenting that they now wish to pursue future studies in plant science and environmentalism. This outdoor lesson made students realise that science does not only take place in the laboratory; there is more to explore beyond the lab.

Lastly, students appreciated that plants are the lungs of the Earth and they need to be conserved for future generations
