Our speaker this year was Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Former Deputy President of RSA and Former United Nations Under-Secretary-General/Executive Director of UN Women. Please click here for the programme, which contains a copy of her full biography.

Dr James opened the evening with a brief welcome, followed with a prayer by Mrs Nkosi-Mnanzana. Talented Grade 8 student led the congregation in a rousing rendition of the National Anthem before Ms Maneli introduced the speaker.

In her keynote address, Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka spoke to the notions of belonging, leading, learning and serving, and the value of each one of these elements in our journey through school and into life thereafter. In her inspirational and very personal address, her wisdom and experiences spoke to building and lifting others, taking people on a path through encouragement and recognition. She is a proud feminist and made it very clear the role feminists play in partnering with men in building a future in which all people are equal and are treated with the respect that they deserve. Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka encouraged our young women to own their space and lead with an ethical and principled approach, taking into consideration the importance of our planet and the most vulnerable members of our global community. She acknowledged the challenges in our country and the need for our young people to take on the mantle of change and bring about a new hope, a new energy and a commitment to justice for all.

Tanaka Muguto treated the audience to a musical performance

We were then treated to a vocal performance by Matric student Tanaka Muguto.

This was followed by a question and answer session, starting with some thought-provoking questions by students: Sidney Benard, Khiara Dullabh, Alessia Gilardi, Kate Harris, Kate Madden, Mikateko Mathye, Tiisego Mogototoane, Keinemigisha Mwebeiha, Ntemi Ngwenya, Camryn Standler. Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka commended them on their thoughtful questions, confidence and eloquence.

After this, questions from the audience were taken, submitted via an online platform so that common themes could be grouped and moderated.

Chair of the PTA, Mr Malose Kekana, delivered the vote of thanks at the close of the evening. Our sincere appreciation to:

  • The College’s operations, AV and security staff
  • Mrs Olimpia Benfield & Mrs Sam Nupen – PTA members and project champions of the event
