Culture Tour to Greece to Italy
This August holiday, a group of 24 enthusiastic students, accompanied by Mr Matthew Ross and Miss Rachael Makatile, embarked on an unforgettable cultural tour of Greece and Italy, exploring the richness of history, art, and tradition these countries offer.
"Our journey began in Athens, where we marvelled at the iconic Acropolis before travelling to Delphi to stand before the Temple of Apollo, a site steeped in myth and history. We also visited the ancient amphitheater of Delphi, which can seat up to 5,000 spectators and once hosted musical performances during the Pythian Games. Standing there, we could almost imagine the sound of music echoing against the mountains, just as it had thousands of years ago. To deepen our cultural experience, we attended a mask-making workshop and watched a stirring performance of Medea, which brought ancient Greek drama to life.
Crossing into Italy, our adventure took us to Milan, where the grandeur of the Duomo di Milano left us in awe. In Verona, we stepped into the world of Shakespeare, exploring the Arena di Verona and the romantic history of Romeo and Juliet. Our time in Venice was a highlight – from the beauty of the Basilica di San Marco to the joy of a mask painting workshop. Then, we enjoyed a serene gondola ride, which gave us a true taste of Venetian charm. The evening reached a magical crescendo as we were serenaded by the Vivaldi Baroque Ensemble, performing The Four Seasons in the very city of its composer.
In Florence, we delved into the city’s fascinating history and were captivated by the majesty of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Our last stop was in Rome, where the Colosseum and Vatican City reminded us of the enduring influence of Roman civilisation. Inside the Vatican, we were especially amazed by the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo’s breathtaking ceiling frescoes left us in awe of their scale, beauty, and storytelling power. We also enjoyed a hands-on pizza-making class, blending fun with culinary tradition.
This tour was more than just travel; it was a celebration of human creativity. We returned home with not only lasting memories but also a deeper appreciation for how art continues to shape societies and connect us across time." - Miss Makatile and Mr Ross.
