Beyond The Score 2026 - Inspiring the Next Generation of Musicians

What an extraordinary day at the Second Annual Beyond the Score Music Workshop hosted by the Boys’ Music Department.

We were privileged to welcome more than 240 students from across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape for an inspiring and immersive musical experience centred around the IEB Grade 12 prescribed music works.

Students had the unique opportunity to experience the prescribed repertoire for subject Music performed live by outstanding professional musicians and educators, bringing the music to life in a way that textbooks simply cannot. From Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 to Schubert’s Erlkönig, West Side Story, and USA Jazz & South African Urban Music, the workshop created a powerful bridge between performance, analysis, and deeper musical understanding.

A heartfelt thanks to conductor Kutlwano Masote and jazz band leader Sisonke Xonti for their incredible musicianship and leadership throughout the day.

Thank you to every teacher, student, performer, and organiser, in particular Mr Geruan Geldenhuys from the Boys’ Music Department, who contributed to making this workshop such a meaningful success. The passion, energy, and commitment to music education on display were truly inspiring.

Beyond the Score continues to grow as a transformative educational platform for music students across South Africa, and we are already excited for what lies ahead in 2027.
