Global Connections: Round Square International Service Project

Girls’ College, Campus |  Author: Mrs Peta Hanly (Director of Character Education)

On 23 July, a delegation of approximately forty international students participating in the Round Square International Service Project at Tiger Kloof visited Soweto. Eight enthusiastic Girls’ College History students, accompanied by Mrs Peta Hanly and Mr David Edwards, joined the group to lead tours of key historical sites and facilitate Baraza discussions centred on service, leadership and global citizenship.

The day began in the vibrant atmosphere of Vilakazi Street, where students from around the world gathered with great excitement. The hum of animated conversations filled the crisp winter air as new connections were formed and experiences shared. Following an authentic South African lunch, the students were divided into four Baraza groups, each led by a Girls’ College representative.

Discussions focused on participants’ experiences during the service project, the lessons they had learned, and their ideas for creating positive change in their communities and beyond. Despite spending only a few hours together, the students engaged deeply and thoughtfully, demonstrating a shared commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world.

The programme also included visits to Nelson Mandela House and the Hector Pieterson Memorial, providing an opportunity to explore significant events and milestones in South African history. These experiences made the day both educational and immersive, allowing South African and international students alike to engage meaningfully with the country's rich heritage and cultural landscape.

The visit was a valuable reminder of the power of dialogue, service, and cross-cultural understanding. Through shared experiences and thoughtful conversations, the students left inspired to continue developing as compassionate and responsible leaders for future generations.
