Boys’ College Grade 8s Embrace the Spirit of Mandela with Acts of Service and Gratitude
Service, compassion and practical action were at the heart of the Boys’ College Grade 8 Mandela Day programme as our boys took part in a series of hands-on activities that demonstrated how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
Working alongside our Parents Samaritan Group (PSG) parents, the boys created cosy blankets for local animal shelters, helping to provide comfort and warmth for animals in need. They also crafted scarves and tin utensils for those experiencing homelessness, learning that even the simplest gestures can have a lasting impact. A reflective session on Nelson Mandela's legacy encouraged the boys to consider the values of gratitude, empathy and service, inspiring them to recognise the role they can play in building stronger, more caring communities. They also participated in a collaborative activity with Clothes To Good, creating educational toys for Early Childhood Development Centres in Diepsloot and supporting early learning through creativity and play.
While Mandela Day encourages 67 minutes of service, the lessons our Grade 8 students gained will extend far beyond a single morning. Through these experiences, they developed practical skills, strengthened their understanding of social responsibility, and discovered the importance of contributing to the lives of others. Service at the Boys' College remains an ongoing commitment throughout the year, through House initiatives, food and vegetable collections, and other community outreach projects, our students continue to embrace opportunities to serve those around them and to live out the values embodied by Nelson Mandela.
Our sincere thanks go to the staff, parents and partner organisations who made the day possible, with special appreciation to the Parents Samaritan Group (PSG), led by Mrs Nadet Budnik, for their continued generosity, enthusiasm and support in creating a memorable and meaningful experience for our Grade 8 students.
