Support for Psychological, Academic and Careers' Education

What we do
At St Stithians Boys’ College, we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive education that considers all aspects of a student's life and development. Our school has a department specifically designed to support students with psychological and academic needs, as well as offer guidance in career education.
The Psychological Support Department
The Psychological Support Department is staffed by Clinical Psychologist and Director of Psychological Services, Sean Tumner, along with Educational Psychologists Greg Crighton and Jessica Millar. Their primary goal is to help students achieve a sense of well-being in all areas of their lives - socially, behaviourally, emotionally, and psychologically. Our psychologists adhere to a strict code of ethics, ensuring that all counselling sessions are kept confidential. Our ultimate vision is to promote optimal mental health for our students, providing support in times of challenge and adversity.
The Psychological Support Team addresses a variety of concerns, including:
- Enhancing emotional intelligence and overall well-being
- Optimising talent, potential, and well-being
- Improving self-concept and fostering growth through intrinsic motivation
- Providing guidance and support on various life issues
- Changing ineffective and/or destructive behavioural patterns
- Offering assistance with depression, stress, grief, and anxiety
- Providing support for individuals who are being bullied or engaging in bullying behaviour
Our Centre is dedicated to helping individuals overcome challenges and achieve personal growth and well-being. We offer a range of services to support individuals in navigating life's difficulties and developing healthier coping mechanisms. Whether you are struggling with emotional issues, seeking guidance on personal development, or in need of support for bullying-related concerns, our team is here to help.
The Academic Support Department
The Academic Support Department is comprised of a team of dedicated professionals who are committed to enhancing the learning experience of students. Staffed by Learning Support Specialists Yvette Smith, (Registered Counsellor, Psychometrist, Career Development Coordinator), Dr Gladys Ayaya (Director of Community Engagement), Boitumelo Kitime, Magdeline Tsolo (Director of Diversity and Transformation), and Jessica Millar (Educational Psychologist).
Our primary focus is on facilitating the development of organisational skills, study techniques, assessment strategies, and goal setting for students. We provide classroom assistance, teacher training, and support to help students reach their full potential. Additionally, we work to identify and overcome barriers to learning in an inclusive educational environment.
One of our key responsibilities is to identify learners who may require accommodations and manage the application process. We keep parents informed throughout this process and ensure that accommodations are administered and managed effectively by our team of learning support specialists.
The Academic Support Team focuses on the following key areas:
- Providing support with learning strategies and organization, maximizing each student's learning potential
- Arranging academic accommodations
- Offering classroom assistance, identifying barriers to learning, and developing instructional practices to promote learning
- Additionally, the team assists in creating personalised structured programs
- Implementing student progress monitoring systems
- Providing teacher training and support.
Our goal is to ensure that every student receives the necessary support and resources to excel academically.
The Careers Education Department
The Careers Education Department is dedicated to guiding our young men in selecting appropriate career paths and determining the tertiary institutions and courses that align with their interests and goals. At SPACE, students have access to career assessments and counselling services to support them in making informed decisions about their future. Additionally, Grade 9 students receive assistance in choosing the most suitable subjects for the Further Education and Training (FET) phase of their academic journey.
