Where It All Began: A St Stithians Story
The story of Thandulwazi begins with its origins in the early 2000s, when our staff, parents and alumni, the Saints family at its finest, came together with a vision that continues to shape us today. They asked the question that would define our institutional character: What if we opened our gates and doors and shared our resources with those who need them most?
This wasn't just an idea - it was Saints values in action. In 2006, St Stithians College established the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy. The name chosen for this initiative was deeply meaningful. Thandulwazi – isiZulu for "love of learning" – would become more than just an academy; it would become a beacon of hope, a bridge between worlds, and a demonstration of the transformative power of education.
Numbers That Speak Volumes
When we reflect on what Thandulwazi has achieved, we are moved by the influence of our institution’s community engagement:
• Saturday School Programme: Over 16,000 learners have walked through our doors, carrying Saints excellence back to their communities.
• Teacher Development Programme: Nearly 17,000 in-service teachers have been empowered by our expertise, multiplying our contribution across the nation.
• Initial-Teacher Intern Training Programme: More than 513 intern-teachers have graduated with teaching degrees and hands-on teaching skills through this programme, extending our educational philosophy into schools nationwide.
• Academic Scholarship Programme: 30 scholarship recipients have been educated at St Stithians College, proving our belief that excellence knows no boundaries.
