St Stithians U16 Basketball Tournament 2022

February 16, 2022 | Campus, Boys’ College | Author: Mandla Faku, Head of Basketball (St Stithians Boys' College)

After nearly two years of non-competitive sport, it was a pleasure to once again host the 4th edition of our St Stithians College U16 basketball Tournament. Over 20 teams participated from schools all over the country – Durban, Mafikeng, Free State and Gauteng. You could sense the eagerness of the participants to play and from day one the excitement of teams was palpable. St Stithians was happy to welcome back to the tournament Michael Mount Waldorf School after a two-year absence and it was wonderful to welcome new comers Redhill and Kingswood School.

This year St Stithians College entered two teams including our U16 side and our U15 side. The U15’s proved to be the toast of the tournament and won many hearts with their gutsy play. Without a doubt they claimed the scalps of many u16 schools including a one-point overtime win against rivals St Johns U16.  Lethukuthula Secondary School from Kathlehong was our development team who were able to participate due to the generosity of Cross Trainer who sponsored the teams participation, kit, accommodation and transport for the tournament.  Although the boys, who are all still in the U15 age group, didn’t fare so well, a lot of experience was gained, and the boys promised a different ball game next year when they return as U16’s - Cross Trainer have generously confirmed their support into the future and we are sure that this team will only go from strength to strength. Our U16’s also had a good tournament and finished overall 3rd and got the bronze medal. The finals between Kearsney and St Albans were a Gauteng vs KZN affair as the crowds was split into two! Kearsney proved to be the stronger of the two with an emphatic 41-34 win to lift the gold - well deserved and worthy winners.

As the curtain came down it was clear how much the players, coaches spectators and parents appreciated just being able to once again play, coach and cheer their teams on. Basketball was the winner. Looking forward to an even bigger and better 2023 tournament.
