Girls’ Preparatory, Campus |  Author: Mrs Zahraa Nakooda

The Grade 7 girls of St Stithians Girls’ Prep marked a significant milestone in their academic and personal journeys with the Beyond the Mirror Film Festival, held on 26 May 2026. This Oscars-inspired event served as a culminating celebration of an extensive Inquiry-Based Learning experience, placing each girl at the centre of her own learning and self-discovery.

The evening was characterised by elegance and excitement, as the Grade 7s arrived dressed to impress and walked the red carpet in the presence of peers, teachers and invited guests. The festive atmosphere, enhanced by classic cinema treats, created a memorable setting that celebrated both the occasion and the remarkable efforts of the girls.

At the heart of the festival was a meaningful inquiry question: “What makes me, me?”Through the creation of their 3–5 minute documentary films, students explored how the people, places, and experiences in their lives have shaped their identities.

Rooted in the principles of Inquiry-Based Learning, this project encouraged curiosity, critical thinking and personal reflection. The Grade 7s engaged deeply with their learning by asking questions, conducting research and making connections across subject areas. The inquiry process enabled them to take ownership of their learning journeys while developing a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

This interdisciplinary approach drew together multiple areas of the curriculum. The girls crafted compelling scripts in English, explored influential historical figures, examined generational influences and societal changes and investigated the role of genetics in shaping identity. Creative expression was further enhanced through design and technology components, resulting in a rich, holistic learning experience.

The culmination of this sustained inquiry was reflected in the quality and depth of the films presented. Each documentary offered a unique and thoughtful perspective, demonstrating not only academic engagement but also emotional insight and authenticity. The confidence with which the girls shared their stories was both inspiring and commendable.

Beyond the glamour of the evening, the festival underscored a deeper educational purpose: to nurture reflective, confident and engaged students. The Beyond the Mirror Film Festival stands as a powerful example of the value of Inquiry-Based Learning in developing voice, agency and a strong sense of identity.

The Girls’ Prep extends its sincere congratulations to all the Grade 7 students for their dedication, creativity and courage. The evening was a proud celebration of their growth, not only as students, but as young women developing a clear sense of self and purpose.
