International Women's Day & International Day Of Women and Girls In Science

March 08, 2021 | Girls’ Preparatory | Author: Lizelle du Plessis

This year’s theme is Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19. At St Stithians Girls’ Preparatory we encourage our young scientists to be confident explorers and to cultivate a love for the sciences.

During our assembly, our budding world-changers learned more about two famous biologists. Conservationist and environmental activist Dr Wangari Matai, who was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize for Peace, and Dr Jane Goodall a world-renowned primatologist and environmental activist.

Learners were introduced to our 6 C’s, the six characteristics of a scientist. Curiosity, communication, cooperation, creativity, commitment and compassion.  Like the phenomenal ladies discussed in the assembly, they too can make a world of difference.

The learners and our parent community are encouraged to become citizen scientists by using the iNaturalist application. Seek by iNaturalist is a fun, safe way to engage kids and beginners in exploring local biodiversity. Seek does not collect, use, or disclose personal information and your geolocation is blurred so the exact location of a street name, even the city is not identifiable. The research conducted is very valuable and gives us a taste of how a small act can lead to major change.
