Building a Community of Belonging

Junior Preparatory, Campus

On Tuesday, 9 June, the Junior Prep proudly hosted a deeply meaningful Diversity and Transformation Parent Connect evening titled “Building a Community of Belonging.” The gathering was anchored in the powerful metaphor: “diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being invited to dance and belonging is dancing like no one is watching.” This idea framed the evening as more than just a discussion - it was an invitation for parents to reflect on what it truly means to feel seen, valued and connected within our school community.

The experience began on a joyful note with an interactive dance activity led by Julie Griffiths. This lively opening broke down barriers, encouraging openness and shared laughter and reminding everyone that belonging often starts with simple, shared moments of joy.

From there, parents engaged with thought‑provoking contributions from guest speakers and representatives of the DTPRG, PTA and Transformation Council. Each voice added a unique perspective on how we can nurture inclusive spaces - whether through policy, practice, or everyday interactions - underscoring the collective responsibility we share in shaping a community where every child and family feels welcome.

The evening concluded with a creative, hands‑on activity inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. Parents crafted their own Circle of Belonging ornaments, each one a symbolic keepsake to take home. These ornaments served not only as a reminder of the evening’s themes but also as a tangible expression of the idea that belonging is something we build together, piece by piece, gesture by gesture.

As the parents departed, they carried with them more than just their crafted circles - they carried a renewed sense of connection and commitment to ensuring that in our community, everyone truly belongs.
