Technology has been exponential and disruptive, bringing about rapid changes in various fields. One notable example of this is ChatGPT, which showcases the power of technology's advancement. As a high school, it is essential to remain aware, and flexible, and equip students with essential skills to thrive in an ever-changing environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a significant catalyst for understanding technology's role in remote communication and crisis management. Embracing blended learning approaches, teachers at the school have been utilizing Google Classroom to share content, assess, and communicate with students effectively.

A few years back, St Stithians recognized the significance of integrating technology into education and took measures to support its growth. The school appointed five Digital Learning Coaches (DLCs) across all five schools. These DLCs work collaboratively to create a shared vision, enabling students to transition seamlessly between schools while acquiring creative and responsible technological skills.

Boys’ College has been actively involved in various activities and events over the past six months, aiming to provide a risk-free space for students to create, explore, and build cutting-edge technology projects. The Boys' College teamed up with Girls’ College to participate in the TeensinAI Global Hackathon at Redhill School. Their outstanding performance secured a local first place and a global third place, making them the first South African team to reach such heights in the competition.

A key responsibility of Digital Learning Coaches is to support teachers in using technology creatively and effectively in their classrooms. To achieve this, the school sent three teachers to the Innovate Edu Summit in May, where international experts shared best practices. Additionally, professional development workshops and one-on-one sessions are conducted to ensure teachers are well-versed in using technology for innovative teaching.

The Boys' College is also exploring the realm of eSport Leagues to cater to students interested in gaming. Currently, we have the RGB Gaming/Nintendo League every Wednesday afternoon, competing against other schools in "Splatoon 3". Moreover, we successfully organized a Minecraft Education eSport Tournament, with Boys’ College emerging as the champions. As part of our efforts to involve Thandulwazi students, we also hosted a coding session for them.

We also focus on robotics, with the World Robotics Olympiad teams participating in the Provincial Tournament. Grade 8 students have built and coded their robots for the Junior section, with the possibility of progressing to the international WRO tournament in Panama City. The school plans to expand its World Robotics Teams in 2024 to include higher grades as well.

Highlighting the importance of technology exposure, Boys' College hosted a "Live your own Code" Tech Expo in the Resource Centre. The event showcased various innovative technologies, including robots, virtual reality experiences, drone flying, and coding camps. Thandulwazi students also had the opportunity to visit the expo, enhancing their knowledge of tech advancements.

The school takes pride in its commitment to technology integration, innovation, and collaboration across all its partner institutions in education. This focus on technology ensures students are well-prepared to face the challenges and opportunities of an ever-evolving world. Parents are also encouraged to witness and engage in this technological journey at the school.
