Exploring Vietnam: A Journey Through History and Culture

During the April holiday 16 enthusiastic History students, accompanied by Mr Thebolo Motshegare and Ms Wendy Armstrong, embarked on an incredible international tour to Vietnam - the first overseas trip for our History department since 2019. Months of meticulous planning and paperwork had finally paid off, and we were eager to immerse ourselves in Vietnam's rich heritage and traditions.

The journey began with two long flights, but our excitement soared as we anticipated experiencing a culture vastly different from our own in South Africa. Arriving in Hanoi the next day, we were greeted by intense heat and humidity that instantly awakened our senses to this new environment. Our first encounter with Vietnam's warmth and hospitality was through our remarkable tour guide, Coung. His engaging personality left a lasting impression on our group, making him one of the highlights of our tour.

Our time in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital city steeped in history, was nothing short of captivating. We quickly learned about the Vietnamese people's deep pride in their heritage, evident in the diverse religious influences showcased across the historical sites we visited—ranging from Catholicism and Hinduism to Buddhism and Confucianism. The well-preserved temples, palaces, and tombs narrated tales of Vietnam's past, revealing a society that values simplicity, hard work, and community over materialism.

The tour had many standout moments, each leaving a lasting impression on us. Spending a night on a 'junk boat' in HaLong Bay was a highlight, with breathtaking scenery, a visit to a magnificent cave, and memorable karaoke sessions under the stars. The Golden Bridge in Banana Valley, accessed by a thrilling cable car ride, offered spectacular views and a taste of French-inspired culture in a sprawling village setting.

Another educational stop was the Ho Chi Minh tunnels, where we learned about guerrilla warfare tactics used during Vietnam's conflict with the USA—an eye-opening experience for our students. In bustling Ho Chi Minh City, teeming with 12 million people and endless scooters, we explored local industries like pearl farming, silk production, and coconut processing, adding depth to our understanding of Vietnamese life and economy.

Our students embraced every moment of this action-packed 10-day adventure, relishing Vietnamese cuisine and bonding over shared experiences. Special appreciation goes to Mr Motshegare for his invaluable support and for arranging a memorable meeting with the South African ambassador in Hanoi.

This tour was not just an educational journey but a life-changing experience for our students and staff, one that will be cherished for years to come.
