Engaging Activities And Acts Of Kindness Mark Mandela Day At The Boys’ College

July 19, 2023 | Boys’ College

Nelson Mandela once said, “There can be no greater gift than that of giving one's time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return.”

Each year we celebrate Mandela Day at the Boys’ College, and this year was no different, bringing an exciting and meaningful day of activities for our grade 8 students. Under the guidance of staff, dedicated organizations, and the Parents' Samaritan Group (PSG), our boys enthusiastically participated in various projects throughout the day.

With the support of our PSG, our boys engaged in creating blankets for residents of old age homes. This activity not only showcased some newfound crafting skills but also emphasized the importance of caring for the elderly in our society. Collaborating again with our PSG they made scarves and tins filled with packets of soup for the homeless. This initiative aimed to provide essential items for those in need and promoted a sense of compassion and empathy among our students.

Partnering with Clothes to Good, the boys undertook the task of designing sensory educational counting books for underprivileged preschools. By combining creativity and educational content, these will serve as valuable learning resources, enhancing the educational environment for young children in need.

Our grade 8 students were inspired by Rev Elroy Kekana and Mr Michael Stewart's talks on service! Rev Kekana reminded us that service is a calling for everyone. He stressed the importance of freedom, love, and having a genuine heart. Drawing inspiration from Galatians 5:13, he encouraged us to find freedom in Christ and let love guide our actions. Rev Kekana shared practical ways to serve, including prayer, helping those in need, offering encouragement, and spreading God's Word.

Mr Stewart had an engaging session with our grade 8s, urging them to explore their passions and strengths. He introduced four crucial questions: What do I love? What am I good at? What does the world need? What can I get paid for? By answering these, our students discovered their personal strengths and how they can make a meaningful impact. Mr Stewart also introduced the concept of "Ikigai" - finding joy in always being busy - when serving others. These talks left a lasting impression, highlighting the power of service.

Throughout the year we continue with our House initiatives of vegetable and other collections and provide much needed support to those in need.

Mandela Day at the Boys’ College proved to be an exceptional day, promoting teamwork, creativity, and compassion among our students. Through their participation in diverse activities, they not only gained practical skills but also learned the importance of giving back to the community. By collaborating and contributing their time and resources, these young grade 8s positively impacted those in need. Mandela's spirit of selflessness and service to humanity was truly embodied on this memorable day.

Our sincere gratitude to the staff and parents involved in making Mandela Day a success and for giving so generously of their time.
