Annual Round Square International Conference

On Thursday 5 October 2023 five students from the Boys’ College travelled to Kenya for the Annual Round Square International Conference. This conference brought together 243 schools from six continents with over 1400 delegates in attendance.

To maximise the trip the Boys’ College met up with a group of schools from Australia, Germany, USA and South Africa to take a pre-conference trip to the Maasai Mara Reserve in the southwestern corner of Kenya.

The trip to the reserve departed out of Nairobi and took us down into the Great Rift Valley that runs the length of the eastern side of Africa, and through the dusty windy towns of remote Kenya into the Mara. A journey that is only 200km in distance but took six hours of driving in convoy of seven vehicles and 42 people.

The Maasai Mara was a wonderfully unique experience. Virtually no trees, wide open grasslands, animals in open view for hundreds of metres away. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience to be part of it. With the highlight for most being a visit to a Maasai village to hear from the Chiefs’ son all about life in the village and to interact with the families who lived there.

After their mesmerizing Maasai Mara journey they returned to the Round Square Conference. They were involved in three captivating rotations: democracy, service, and adventure, spread over three days. For their service day, they engaged with local Nairobi schools, fostering community connections and making a positive impact. The adventure day was an unforgettable night spent camping under the stars in Nairobi National Park.

This incredible trip not only etched beautiful memories but also allowed students to form lasting friendships with peers from around the world. A deep sense of thanks and gratitude to Mrs Maruggi who put this all together for the students and staff who travelled.

As we reflect on this unforgettable experience, we eagerly anticipate next year's Round Square Conference, hosted in Bogota, Colombia. More adventures, friendships, and life-changing experiences await!
