Educational philosophy

The educational philosophy of the Boys' Prep is based on five pillars, designed to inspire excellence along the journey towards becoming good men.

Spiritual

Spirituality

The purpose is to instill core values and daily expectations that align with the teachings of the Scriptures, our BP (biblical principles) values and the College’s Statement on Spirituality. We believe that a comprehensive understanding of religious and ethical principles empowers our students to make informed decisions and develop strong moral character.

Our intent is to engage students in contextual lessons and meaningful discussions. Through our twice-weekly chapel services and Religious Education (RE) lessons, we aim to equip our students with the knowledge, skills and values needed to navigate the complexities of the modern world. We believe that RE is not just a subject but an essential part of our students’ spiritual and moral development, enabling them to become responsible global citizens.

Academics

Our commitment to academic development is rooted in the belief that a solid academic foundation is paramount for ongoing educational success. We aim to establish an educational environment that not only prepares young men for academic success but also cultivates their personal growth, character development and emotional wellbeing, allowing them to make meaningful societal contributions.

St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory aspires to create a meaningful and memorable academic journey that inspires curiosity and a love of learning, preparing students for the future and equipping them with knowledge, skills, resources and motivation.

At the Boys’ Preparatory, from Grade 3 to Grade 7, we expose our students to a wide range of phase-specific subjects that focus on academic rigour, fundamental skills and character development. Lessons and units of learning are student centered and enable authentic learning experiences that promote engagement and exploration. The Academic pillar focuses on the following:

  • Inclusivity
  • Pedagogy
  • Assessment and Achievement
  • Boy-Centered Learning
  • Rigour

Sport

At the Boys’ Preparatory we believe that, through sport, we can empower our students to become well-rounded individuals who are not only physically fit but also equipped with the skills and values necessary for success in life. We are dedicated to creating a sporting culture that celebrates inclusivity, participation, enjoyment and competitiveness in equal measure.

St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory is dedicated to creating an inclusive, enjoyable, and holistic sports environment that emphasises personal development, sportsmanship and competitiveness, while providing ample support and continuous improvement through sports programmes.

At the Boys’ Preparatory, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse sports culture that encourages mass participation among our students. The primary goal of the Sport pillar is to ensure a well-organised sporting programme in which fun and enjoyment are paramount.

While we emphasise the importance of participation and personal development, we also recognise that excellent results play a role in the sports experience. Therefore, we will always strive to compete to the best of our abilities within the framework of our inclusive and enjoyable sports environment.

Arts & Culture

The primary aims of the Arts and Culture pillar at St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory are to inspire, nurture and empower the creative potential within every student, cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the creative arts.

Music

Through our comprehensive interdisciplinary approach in music, visual and dramatic arts, we recognise the transformative power of artistic expression in shaping young minds, encouraging creativity and building confidence in every student.

We are committed to providing an enriching education to equip our students with the skills, knowledge and cultural understanding that are necessary to thrive in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. We do this in the following ways:

  • Nurturing Creative Expression
  • Excellence in Education
  • Integration of Disciplines
  • Celebration of Diversity
  • Performance and Exhibition Opportunities
  • Community Engagement

Service Leadership

Service & Leadership

The Service pillar at St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory School is dedicated to fostering empowerment and developing character through service. We seek to nurture a powerful sense of community and connection, instil a sense of belonging and responsibility, promote social awareness, and equip students with real-world skills that will allow them to make a world of difference in their communities and beyond.

The Service pillar is aligned with our Methodist teachings, inspired by the exhortation ‘To whom much is given, much will be required’ (Luke 12:48). We are dedicated to living out the Saints Character (Know yourself, Be yourself, Make your contribution) and the St Stithians College Honour Code (Honour God, Honour others, Honour self). We believe that everybody can benefit from serving others and that ‘no act of kindness is ever wasted’ (Aesop).

We develop a spirit of service by embracing the Boys’ Preparatory core values of love, honesty, respect, courage and responsibility. We also draw on the guiding principles from the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) and our #GoodBoyGreatSaint statement.

Serving

Engaging in service within our school community and beyond offers advantages for boys, such as forging meaningful connections with their peers and the broader community, fostering social awareness that extends to their roles as young men, nurturing a sense of social responsibility, and honing real-world skills that empower them for success in their future endeavours.

Service includes community engagement, school community service and outreach, and individual community service performed by Grade 7 students.

The Boys’ Prep has a community engagement partnership with Nehemiah Primary School in Ivory Park.

The purpose is to make connections and build relationships across the social divide in a fun, inspiring, respectful and caring way.

In time, we aim to expand the range of extra-curricular activities, cultural exchanges and enrichment programmes available to students to give them access to a wider range of experiences that promote personal and social growth.

Leadership

The underlying philosophy of our leadership programme at the Boys’ Preparatory is the concept of servant leadership – the genuine desire to serve others.

We believe that every boy has the ability to lead and that most will be called upon in their future to do so.

Our leadership programme promotes values such as humility and empathy, which will enable our students to be responsible citizens who act and behave with a sound set of personal morals, and thereby lead by example within their spheres of influence.

We strive to cultivate servant leadership qualities among our students.

We are committed to empowering student leaders by providing them with ongoing leadership opportunities across all of our pillars. We strive to create numerous pathways for young men to lead in areas that ignite their passion and enthusiasm, which creates an engaging and meaningful educational journey.

Our themes are based on the biblical Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and the Round Square IDEALS. We furthermore draw on scripture, such as:

Mark 10:45 – ‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve’ (NIV);

John 13:15, in which Jesus exhorted his disciples, after washing their feet, ‘I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you' (NIV).

Philippians 2:3, in which the Apostle Paul wrote, ‘Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves’ (ESV).

Social and Emotion Learning (SEL)

Our Service pillar plays a crucial role in the holistic development of our boys, contributing to the growth of essential social and emotional competencies. These include:

Self-awareness, which helps the boys to understand their strengths and areas for improvement;

Self-management, which equips them to handle challenges and setbacks effectively;

Social awareness, fostering empathy and understanding of others’ perspectives; Relationship skills, vital for building strong, respectful connections with peers; and Responsible decision-making, enabling them to make ethical and thoughtful choices as they develop into responsible young adults.
