Gauteng Schools Rowing Championships

November 10, 2023 | Girls’ College | Author: Kate Christowitz, St Stithians Girls' College Head of Rowing

Gauteng Schools Rowing Championships is the first championship regatta of every school rowing season. Although our season started with no access to Roodeplaat dam, our rowers stepped up to the challenge of a 3-day championship regatta.

Of the 17 events we entered across all age groups, we made 15 A finals, and won 9 medals. This is a great start to our season and testament to our ability to find courage and confidence to achieve the common goal.

As we focus on the long goal of South African Schools Championships in March, it is important to reflect on a great weekend of racing. Our U14s showed extreme bravery by racing the doubles against girls who have had many more hours on the water. The U15s, although the smallest age group, showed grit and achieved a silver medal in the Octuple. The U16s now race 2000m, have only just learnt to row sweep, and yet they have blown us all away with their medal worthy skill. The Opens have successfully woven together as an age group and showed exactly what it means to be a Saints Rower by racing their hearts out for the pride of the club.

Notable mention must be made of:

Lufuno Tshikwatamba and Zazi Manzana who won Gold in the U16 A 2- event.
Lufuno Tshikwatamba, Anouk van der Breggen, Bavani Naidu, Masentle Mpofu and Bontle Nogomba who won Gold in the U16 A 4+ event.
