New RS Representative on the UK Board

Congratulations to our Round Square Director, Mrs Christine Ashton, on her appointment as the new RS Representative on the UK Board.

"Christine Ashton from St Stithians Girls' College has been elected as the Rep’s Representative to the RS UK Board. Her election still needs to be ratified at the 2016 Board Meeting, but she earned the majority vote for this position. Christine is currently the African Round Square Rep. Well done, Christine! I am delighted for the African Region and congratulate you both personally and on behalf of the region on being elected to this position.

Christine’s knowledge of and experience in Round Square will be of great value to the Board and I have every faith that she will represent the RS reps well. She has been active in Round Square since 2003, and has organised and attended many conferences, RSIS projects, and has played a key role in the organisation during her tenure thus far."

Pop up Museum forms the backdrop for the RS filming experience

Thank you so much to all who assisted with and participated in the RS filming in our very busy Founder’s Week. Your patience and flexibility was greatly appreciated. The team managed to film 5 hours of footage which they took back to London yesterday. Once RS Head office has sifted through what they feel is suitable it will go into an electronic poster on the RS website. The footage will be made available to Girls’ College to use where we see fit. The filming crew was extremely complimentary about the calibre of our staff, parents, students and alumni.
A huge thank you One & All!
Christine

Postcards from Exchange - Leila Fernandes

I have been on exchange for nearly two weeks now and I still see or do something new every day. Being at school here in Germany is definitely different to being at school back home. I am at Louisenlund School which is in Northern Germany. The school is predominantly a boarding school but has a small group of students who are day scholars. When I first arrived I did not know what it would be like at a boarding school. It was definitely not what I expected. The school has a campus with many small buildings placed all around. The boarding house are small and don’t have a lot of students living in them. Many are co-ed in the sense that the downstairs part is for girls while the upstairs is for boys. There is one main academic building, which is the Schloss, but most of the classes are in small buildings around the campus. As an exchange student I was laced into Pre-IB classes. This is the introduction to the IB which is an international course for students. The classes are taught in English unlike the normal German syllabus. The classes and times work quite differently to Saints. I have breakfast from 07:30 but my first class is only at 08:15. Most classes are double periods which add up to an hour and a half class. After the first lesson there is another breakfast and then classes until lunch at 13:15. Some students have classes after lunch but you could also have free periods throughout the week where you do not attend all the classes. I don’t have class on a Monday morning which is amazing because I only go to class at 10:05 and I get to sleep in. The school is extremely international and I have made friends from all over the world. The school has many different subjects and languages. I take classes like Theory of Knowledge and Global Politics which are really interesting. Not only does the school have a wide range of subjects but also a huge amount of extramurals that you can take up. They offer things like Sailing, Fire Fighting, boxing, volleyball and many other cultural and academic activities. There is a huge amount of freedom here. Whenever I need something I just walk into town and go to the shops or the hair dresser or the pizza place. It’s around 1,5km away so you often take a friend with you. The school is in a cute countryside area. It is a huge change to the city but it is really beautiful and peaceful. There isn’t much that you cannot do here which is amazing. I am having a fantastic time here and am looking forward to the remainder of my time here.
