SPORT Roundup Term Two
SPORT
General
We had a very successful end to the summer sports programme. The transition between the summer sports programme and the winter sports program took place in the 2nd week of March and is a particularly busy part of the term. The Saints Sports Festival was a huge success but the timing made for interesting organisation due to Easter being so early this year.
Aquatics
Diving
Two of our divers, Bailey Heydra and Bailey Davenport have been selected to represent South Africa at the FINA World Junior Championships in the Ukraine in July. This announcement came off the back of a very successful SA Nationals in April where both divers posted qualifying scores.
Swimming
We had many swimmers qualifying for Level 2 Regionals 2 swimmers and Level 3 Regionals 3 swimmers, South African National Junior Champs 14 swimmers and South Africa Senior Nationals 7 swimmers. Amongst them, they won 14 individual medals and many more relay medals. Gina Miller was selected for the SA Junior Youth Swimming Squad. Dakota Tucker was selected by the Gauteng Department of Sport and Culture to compete in the Tri Colour Games in Italy in July.
Water Polo
After another highly successful water polo season, a few of our girls Leila Fernandes, Kate Hinrichs, Una Donnelly, Jennifer Everett and Zànne Smit were part of the Gauteng U18 Team that won the U18 section of the Currie Cup. This year, the Currie Cup was hosted by Gauteng at St Stithians and it was an enormously successful tournament which showcased our beautiful facilities.
Leila Fernandes and Kate Hinrichs will also be representing SA U18 at the Junior World Championships in Serbia in August. Jordan Wedderburn and Natasja Troskie have been selected for the SA U16A Team and Tatum Lomax, Nicolle Cronje and Abi Sooku were selected for the SA U16B Team. Both teams competed in the Junior Pan Pacific Tournament in New Zealand in July.
Hockey
We had 20 girls chosen for the District Teams this year and ten of these players went on to be selected for the Southern Gauteng teams that will play in the IPT at the end of June. We had three players Taryn Rauff, Cloé de Souza and Caitlin Readhead selected for the Provincial U18A Team which is a huge achievement.
We still must play in the prestigious Howell/Pullen Tournament U16 and 1st Team in July and, as defending champions of the Pullen Trophy, we hope to perform well again this year.
The 1st Team has, once again, been invited to the Super 12 Tournament hosted by Oranje Meisies in Bloemfontein in August. Only the top 12 schools in South Africa get invited and by finishing 11th in South Africa, we have qualified for this prestigious tournament.
Netball
After the retirement of Mrs Pat van den Munckhof at the end of 2017, this season was used to consolidate and bring on new coaching staff. The new coaching staff proved themselves to be very worthwhile and we will keep building into 2019. The 1st Team performed very well at this year’s Sports Fest, winning all of their matches. This proved to be a good start for the season. The U16 Team entered the Rustenburg Girls’ Netball Tournament in Cape Town in April and came a very credible 6th place, gaining a great deal of match experience. Our teams played well through the league season and we finished 2nd in the league. Our U15A and U16A teams made it through to playoffs where the U15A won gold and the U16A won silver. We are delighted that Amara Agbai was selected for the GSS U15 Squad.
Cross Country
Kamryn Norton, Katerina Gabriel, Hannah Schutte, Skye Tucker and Jenna-Lee Markgraaff who were all selected for the Northern District Cross Country team that competed in the District Championships in Pretoria. They all performed superbly with Kamryn making a top 10 finish and Katerina and Skye making a top 15 finish.
Soccer
Our soccer team continues to perform well in the league with some impressive victories over Bishop Bavin 11-0, Dominican Convent 8-0 and Brescia 10-1. The league playoffs will take place in July.
Equestrian
Piper Crow, Georgia Kontominas, Zoe Norton, Erin Bastion, Kristin Leeming, Stephanie Court, Sarah Smith, Tshedza Matiwaza, Teagan Ralph and Kristi Fourie have been selected for the Gauteng Regional Finals which will take place in August. We are currently in second place in the overall Sanesa points standings.

The team was placed second overall and Nkazi was placed fourth. The competition was also a qualifier for the Youth Olympics and Nkazi qualified as the official reserve for the team.
