Pirates, Passion and a Drama Production

June 27, 2016 | Boys’ Preparatory

Despite all the budget concerns, paperwork, meetings about the meeting to schedule the meetings, the absenteeism, the excited boys, staff and parents, nothing compares to watching a staff member and each of the 414 boys at the prep learn the true meaning of "ensemble".

...And nothing compares to the pure joy of watching the ones we knew would “eventually get it" or "finally, really get it”. (Here we probably refer more to staff than the boys). The confidences shared by our boys as they performed was truly rewarding.

We, the staff, stood there performing introductions to the Pirates of the Curry Bean with true excitement that we had managed to put this production toegther.

Let us now thank Mrs Bragge and the Arts and Culture Department for a production that truly placed our boys on the Stage – You, the permanently fatigued; you, the loyal-to-the-point-of-self-neglect; you, the motivator of all boys, staff and parts of the play.

You are the one who make it all look so easy. Thank you.

You juggled staff acting, boys and their personalities, light and sound technicians and class moms. You created a play and an opportunity where every boy – no matter how flamboyant, no matter how shy – could embrace his inner pirate, monkey, rat, sailor or island dancer…

Mrs Bragge, you aren’t just teaching Drama; you are teaching life skills, and you aren’t just teaching choreography; you are teaching our boys to dance.

Hats off to you for making room for each boy to be a star.
