Recent highlights and achievements

Equestrian

Harry Butcher who participated in 17 events on three different horses at the 3rd Inter-schools Qualifier held at Eaton Farm.

In the Prix Caprilli Level 1 he took 1st place out of 15 riders in both the a and b events riding his young horse, Tomachek
In the Prix Caprilli Level 3 he rode two horses, taking 2nd place on Manhattan and 3rd place on Firefly in the a event and 2nd place in the b event.
In Performance riding Level 7 (the highest level) he took 3rd place on Firefly riding against 10 of the most experienced riders
In the Dressage events he placed 3rd and 4th out of 26 riders on Firefly in the a and b events and placed a creditable 7th place out of a field of 24 on Tomachek

The Gauteng Regional Equestrian finals have been announced and we are proud of Harry who has qualified for the Gauteng Central A team in 4 events and for the B team in 3 other events.

 

Maths

Three of our boys have qualified for Round 3 of the South African Mathematics Olympiad. This means that they are amongst the top 100 Mathematics Olympiad participants in South Africa and will compete on 27 July in Round 3 to make the South African National team.

The following boys were selected into the Johannesburg Regional Team to compete in the South African Mathematics Regional Team competition. 50 of the top mathematicians per region go head to head on Saturday 9 September and once again St Stithians Boys’ College is the venue for the Johannesburg Team.

Basketball

Three of our boys have been selected to represent the Junior NBA South African team against other Junior NBA teams from Africa. Our Coach Roland “Vipes” Andongndou has been selected as the South African Coach

The players are: Nyasha Gumbo, Joshua Ozabor and Thabani Manguruanyanga

They will be representing South Africa at the Royal Bafokeng Junior NBA Africa Tournament from Monday 31 July 2017 to Thursday 3 August 2017. 

 

Action Cricket

The following Grade 8 boys represented Central and Western Gauteng at the recent action cricket Interprovincial Tournament (IPT) held in Pietermaritzburg.

Troyden Blackie, Dylan Cox, Ruben van Tonder, Josh Elliot, Nathan Hoffman, Dylan Kennerley, Billy Van Zyl and Ryan Weaver. Well done to Josh, Dylan Kennerley and Nathan of the Central Cats side winning Silver, and Billy, Ruben and Dylan Cox of Western Gauteng who won Bronze.

Josh Elliot and Dylan Kennerley were included in the top ten “All Stars team” and Billy van Zyl, Ruben van Tonder, Dylan Cox and Josh Elliot were selected for the U15 National training squad for the World Cup in Dubai in 2018.

Sebastian De Oliveira represented and captained the U16 Central Gauteng team at the Action Cricket IPT’s in Pietermaritzburg, taking silver.  Sebastian was selected for the 17 & Under South African squad for the 2018 World Cup in Dubai. They will be attending a SAICF camp after which the final team that will travel to the World Cup will be announced.

 

Squash

Cameron O’Grady played for the U14A Central Gauteng team in the recent IPT. After playing some intense five setters and against SA's top 5, Central Gauteng placed 3rd with only 4 points making up the difference between 1, 2 and 3. 

Michael Wasley participated in SA Nationals Squash tournament and then went to Cape Town with U19B Gauteng team to participate in the IPT’s.

 

Tennis

Justin Liebenberg won the KZN Men’s Tennis Open.

Thabo Ncube achieved his 1st International Tennis Federation Points in Lesotho and Mozambique. Thabo made it to the quarter finals of the Lesotho ITF in both singles and doubles. In Mozambique, he made it to the doubles semi-finals. These are his first ITF points.

Bertus Kruger was selected to represent South Africa at the Junior Roland Garros French Open Tennis Tournament.This is an incredible achievement and very few South Africans have managed to achieve this.

 

Soccer

Matthew Stransky was scouted by Bidvest Wits Soccer to join their Academy - this is a huge achievement

 

Hockey

Joshua Pilling has been selected for SA Schools U16 hockey and was awarded Most Valuable Midfielder at the recent IPT's in Pretoria

Patrick Martin and Mark Strickett were part of the Southern Gauteng U18A team and coached by Mr Ricky West (BC 1st Team Hockey coach) - they finished third at the IPT’s, thus winning bronze

 

Cross Country

The following athletes were selected for the Northern Districts Cross Country team:

Liam Keegan - Junior team

 

Fencing

Harry Saner achieved two Gold medals at the Western Cape Open (National competition) in Cape Town in May. One for Junior (U20) Mens Epee and one for Junior Mens Foil. Harry has gained in experience and confidence as a result of his participation in the Junior World Championships and is fencing with passion and determination. Harry also participated in the Senior National Fencing Championships held at Edgewood Training Centre in Pinetown in July and won the individual silver medal in the Senior Men's Foil event, Team gold medal in Foil and silver medal in Team Épée.

Silver Award - Michael Millard and Tafara M’Kombe

Gold Award - Callum Trainer

 

Skydiving

Michael Cook recently qualified and completed the (AFF) Accelerated Free Fall course (Skydiving), requiring a minimum of 12 jumps. With each jump the student is asked to display a specific task of competency. Michael is now in the ISP course (Intermediate Skills Programme) which requires demonstration of skills, where opening altitude is 30 000 feet.

 

Dancing

Lucretius Masanga came out on top in All Style battles at the 108 Dance Festival in May 2017 as an individual. This was a provincial festival with competitors from Cape Town, KZN and Port Elizabeth. Lucretius also danced in a crew called the Dye-Namic Crew which came first in Senior crews. Lucretius is already a world champion from the previous international dance competitions.

 

Archery

Gregory Bruynse achieved his provincial colours for Archery in the category – Junior Male Bowhunter Recurve

 

Mountain Biking

Andrew Hill  participated in the High school mountain bike race at Hartebeespoort as part of the North West series. He came 20th overall in the juniors and 7th in his age group (U17 riders)
