Sustainability at St Stithians College

“That here our ship once anchor’d and here its course was set …”

St Stithians College has been described by some as “a national asset”. Since 1953, St Stithians has positioned itself as a leading educational institution in South Africa, offering a quality, values-based, holistic education for both boys and girls. Set in a unique environment, Saints is, in many ways, one of a kind: it is a college of seven schools, situated on 105 hectares of land in the heart of a city, and offers a distinctive synergy model of education. The College prides itself on being at the forefront of educational best practice and thinking. Firmly rooted in South Africa, the College is globally recognised as a site of academic excellence.

Sustainability at St Stithians

Education is continuously evolving and improving and remaining at the forefront of these changes requires funding. Rising tuition fees and the shrinking pool of parents who can afford such fees are a threat facing most independent schools across the world. Thus, focusing on the long-term sustainability of St Stithians College is necessary to ensure that generations to come continue to enjoy a quality Saints education.

Long-term sustainability in a democratic South Africa demands that the College takes a broader view of sustainability and contributes to the wider community in which it operates.

Sustainability at St Stithians also reflects a commitment to the College’s Methodist roots, and the intention to be an institutional citizen in South African society. This means also ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy.

Our goal is: “To carry forward, build on and sustain the original objectives of the Endowment Fund Trust which was set up in the Will of the late Albert Charles Collins, namely – the establishing, equipping and maintaining a Methodist educational school called St Stithians.”
