Michael John Lumb

MICHAEL LUMB MATRIC 1998
Has been selected to play cricket for England. He is the son of prolific Yorkshire opener Richard Lumb and his sister Katherine attended the Girls’ College. Michael was born in South Africa and was educated at St Stithians Boys’ College. He made his way through the junior teams in Transvaal before going to England to play for Yorkshire. A knee injury in 2001 meant that Lumb played only a small part in Yorkshire's success in winning the County Championship that year, although he did record a maiden first-class hundred against Leicestershire. In doing so Lumb became part of only the fourth father-and-son pair to score centuries for Yorkshire.
Recently Michael was signed by Shane Warne to play for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2010 Indian Premier League.
Lumb has been selected in England's 15 man squad for the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 currently playing in the West Indies.

Boys’ College - Theatre Workshops
At the end of Term one Old Stythian, Tamarin McGinley, conducted physical theatre workshops with the Boys’ College Grade 11 Drama students, in the Stage Door Theatre. Using Jerzi Grotowski’s theology as her basis, she challenged the boys to think out of their physical comfort zones.
Ayanda Zwambila competed in the South African Junior Diving Championships during the holidays. She competed in the Under 14 age group and her results were fantastic!

1st in the Synchronized Diving section.
2nd in the 1 Metre competition
3rd in the 3 Metre competition
Micaela Bouter's success at SA National Aquatic Championships, held in Durban from 10-13 April.
Micaela won the 16/U events on 1m, 3m and platform, making her the SA Champion in that age group.  However, the most impressive feat was the fact that she won the WOMEN'S events on 1 and 3m. Probably the most impressive result was Micaela winning the "Most Improved Trophy" with an improvement of 14.78 per dive.  This is remarkable and fully attributed to her determination, tireless hard work and good spirit.  Micaela has learnt a full list of new dives this season - all with very high degree of difficulties.  She certainly has kept the St Stithians flag flying high with regards to diving, and is a great credit to her school.

This weekend Boys' Prep hosted Grey Bloem for a weekend of sporting and cultural fixtures. One of the truly memorable highlights was our Marimba Band participating with Grey Bloem's Boere Orkes on Friday night. The Tree Quad evening setting, was a terrific backdrop to this truly unique cultural experience.
LINDSAY BENNETT AWARD for altruistic service to the community
The award is made annually in memory of Lindsay Bennett, a Founder pupil of St Stithians Girls’ College.
The Lindsay Bennett Award is intended for a girl who instinctively puts others before self, as did Lindsay – a Saints girl who has really “made a difference” to our community through her unselfish devotion to the interests and welfare of others. This year it has been awarded to Sherene Lahoud.

The St Stithians Girls' Prep athletes competed in the Prestige Athletics event, which was held on Friday, 9 October.  Nine girls' schools participated and St Stithians won the event, which included long distance, hurdles, sprints, long jump and high jump.

St Stithians Boys’ College – Edward Wadsworth
Edward Wadsworth, the St Stithians College 2009 Deputy Headboy, won 11 prizes at the Matric Prizegiving recently. The prizes were awarded for academic excellence and service to the community, over a number of years. The Grade 12 Class prize recognised his achievement of obtaining a 90% average in the Matric Prelim exams, for which he was also awarded Honours Summa Cum Laude. Edward attended Laerskool Jan Celliers for his primary school education. He is also an accomplished pianist and photographer.

Cricketer Grant Elliott visits Saints
The Boys' College was proud to host former St Stithians College pupil, Grant Elliott (Matric 1997) who is now playing cricket for New Zealand. Grant mentioned how important the values that he learnt at school have mattered throughout his life. He also said that the boys must make the most of the opportunities that come their way.
In the photograph with Grant are members of the 1st XI Cricket Team and Coaches:

Men in Red, Boys in Blue

Johannesburg Welsh Male Voice Choir (u.d.o Jonathan Vieler), St Stithians Boys’ College Choir and the Duke of Cornwall Singers, presented the “Men in Red & Boys’ in Blue” concert with special guests, The Wits Choir (the latter choirs all u.d.o. Dalene Hoogenhout). In the recently refurbished St Stithians College Chapel, the audience of over five hundred was entertained for more than two hours. Each choir in turn enthralled with songs from Africa and Wales, and contemporary or sacred melodies.

The concert was a wonderful opportunity for former Boys’ College staff member, Hugh Huggett and ‘old’ Dukes, now in the WITS choir, to perform with the current Dukes and Choir when all the choirs performed as a massed choir.

The Grade 5 girls are successfully completing their visits to Miracle Mission and their collections of baby goodies for Florida baby home. These are 2 homes for abandoned and orphaned children. Our Saints girls have collected items for the homes and spent time simply loving and stimulating the babies.

National School Aids Week.
Bradley Walden (Grade 2) became extremely inquisitive and motivated to make a difference after Founder’s Day 2008, which focused on “AIDS”. He entered into a partnership with Sidney, his beading partner, who makes AIDS keyrings that Bradley designed and has sold in the community. He has raised more than R3000 for Cotlands through his “Stop AIDS Club”, and continues to be involved in this project.
Bradley shared his story with the Junior Prep this week as part of our Social Awareness week.

IPL comes to St Stithians Boys' College
The St Stithians Oval was the venue for a friendly cricket match between some of the members of the Mumbai Indians squad and their sponsors. The sponsors team was short of players, so four of the Saints 1st XI stepped in to help out! It was a wonderful opportunity for the young cricketers to test their skills with the professional and the match was umpired by St Stithians Science teacher, Mr Barry Lambson

ST JOHN'S - a derby highlight of the year!
Another nail biting weekend of rugby with the 1st XV beating St Johns by 27-16.
Tries by Madoda Gamede (2 tries), Katlego Kgame and Sean Sanders. Morgan Ferguson converted 2 of the tries, and succeeded with 1 penalty.
St John's took the lead but then Saints bounced right back to score and resume the lead. It was a close game then, with about 10 mins to go, Saints stamped their authority and were the deserved winners.

First Photo shows Madoda Gamede on his way to scoring his first try of the match.

ZWARTKOPS
The match against Zwartkops was one that we did not know what to expect. It is the first time Saints has played against the school from Pretoria and there was very little information on them. It was a physical encounter, with both teams not holding back. It took Saints a little while to settle down, but once they got going the score board ticked over happily for the home side to show 37-0.
Tries where scored by Grant Thomson 2,Nkuli Gamede, Cameron Smith ,Nick Hawinkels
Morgan Ferguson 4 conversions and 2 penalties.

Second Photo shows Nkuli Gamede about to cross the try line.

CANSA SHAVATHON
St Stithians College showed their support for the Cansa Shavathon on the 26 February by appealing to all students ( Grade 0 -12) and staff to contribute to this worthy cause. Through the combined efforts of the shaving, spraying and further donations from parents, the College raised a total of R46,000.
Over a three period a group of staff volunteers sprayed and shaved over 2300 learners and staff. Some of the innovative ideas for raising funds included the auctioning off of prefects, staff and the Rector to shave their heads. St Stithians College challenges all schools in the area to better the contribution to fighting cancer next year!

St Stithians Boys' College
In keeping with the importance St Stithians Boys' College places on heritage and on acknowledging the work of former members of the Saints Community, the College recently celebrated two historic occasions.

The first was to commemorate Years of Headboys from 1956-2009. The Headmaster, Mr Dave Knowles, hosted a dinner for seventeen former Headboys as well as the four living former Headmasters: Mr Steyn Krige 1962-1968), Mr Mark Henning (1969-1988), Mr David Wylde (1989-1999) and Mr Ian McLachlan (1999-2006). The evening was a celebration of the progress made by the Boys' College over the years, as well as an occasion for reminiscing and for giving gratitude to the hard work of those who gave so much to the College.
Mr Ian McLachlan, Mr Mark Henning, Mr Steyn Krige, Mr David Wylde, Mr Dave Knowles

The second occasion, equally nostalgic, was to Celebrate 21 Years of The Duke of Cornwall Singers. Affectionately known as The Dukes the group started in 1986 with Mrs Moira Schafer as the Conductor, followed by Mrs Dalene Hoogenhout since 1998. Various groups of Dukes entertained a delighted audience with a variety of songs and at one point during the evening, there were 52 former and current Dukes performing on the stage!

Both events proved to be extremely successful and were a reminder of the importance of tradition and of continuity in creating a strong foundation on which the Boys' College will continue to flourish.

The tenth Ubombo Project took place during August with twenty seven boys and girls and nine adults working in this rural and impoverished community in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The group were hosted once again by Mr Dave and Mrs Dawn Irons and they taught in the high school, erected soccer and netball pitches at the junior school and built a patio and swings at the Ubombo Children’s Care Village.
