This
weekend Boys' Prep hosted Grey Bloem for a weekend of
sporting and cultural fixtures. One of the truly memorable
highlights was our Marimba Band participating with Grey Bloem's
Boere Orkes on Friday night. The Tree Quad evening setting, was a
terrific backdrop to this truly unique cultural experience. |
LINDSAY
BENNETT AWARD for altruistic service to the community
The award is made annually in memory of Lindsay Bennett, a Founder
pupil of St Stithians Girls’ College.
The Lindsay Bennett Award is intended for a girl who instinctively
puts others before self, as did Lindsay – a Saints girl who has
really “made a difference” to our community through her unselfish
devotion to the interests and welfare of others. This year it has
been awarded to Sherene Lahoud. |

ST STITHIANS BOYS’ COLLEGE
‘Men in Red, Boys
in Blue’
Johannesburg Welsh Male Voice Choir (u.d.o Jonathan Vieler), St
Stithians Boys’ College Choir and the Duke of Cornwall Singers,
presented the “Men in Red & Boys’ in Blue” concert with special
guests, The Wits Choir (the latter choirs all u.d.o. Dalene
Hoogenhout). In the recently refurbished St Stithians College
Chapel, the audience of over five hundred was entertained for more
than two hours. Each choir in turn enthralled with songs from Africa
and Wales, and contemporary or sacred melodies.
The concert was a wonderful opportunity for former Boys’ College
staff member, Hugh Huggett and ‘old’ Dukes, now in the WITS choir,
to perform with the current Dukes and Choir when all the choirs
performed as a massed choir.

School Aids Week.
Bradley Walden (Grade 2) became extremely inquisitive and motivated
to make a difference after Founder’s Day 2008, which focused on
“AIDS”. He entered into a partnership with Sidney, his beading
partner, who makes AIDS keyrings that Bradley designed and has sold
in the community. He has raised more than R3000 for Cotlands through
his “Stop AIDS Club”, and continues to be involved in this project.
Bradley shared his story with the Junior Prep this week as part of
our Social Awareness week.

IPL comes to St Stithians Boys' College
The St Stithians Oval was the venue for a friendly cricket match
between some of the members of the Mumbai Indians squad and their
sponsors. The sponsors team was short of players, so four of the
Saints 1st XI stepped in to help out! It was a wonderful opportunity
for the young cricketers to test their skills with the professional
and the match was umpired by St Stithians Science teacher, Mr Barry
Lambson

ST JOHN'S - a derby highlight of the year!
Another nail biting weekend of rugby with the 1st XV beating
St Johns by 27-16.
Tries by Madoda Gamede (2 tries), Katlego Kgame and Sean
Sanders. Morgan Ferguson converted 2 of the tries, and
succeeded with 1 penalty.
St John's took the lead but then Saints bounced right back
to score and resume the lead. It was a close game then, with
about 10 mins to go, Saints stamped their authority and were
the deserved winners.
First Photo shows Madoda Gamede on his way to scoring his
first try of the match.
ZWARTKOPS
The match against Zwartkops was one that we did not know
what to expect. It is the first time Saints has played
against the school from Pretoria and there was very little
information on them. It was a physical encounter, with both
teams not holding back. It took Saints a little while to
settle down, but once they got going the score board ticked
over happily for the home side to show 37-0.
Tries where scored by Grant Thomson 2,Nkuli Gamede, Cameron
Smith ,Nick Hawinkels
Morgan Ferguson 4 conversions and 2 penalties.
Second Photo shows Nkuli Gamede about to cross the try line. |

CANSA SHAVATHON
St Stithians College showed their support for the Cansa Shavathon on
the 26 February by appealing to all students ( Grade 0 -12) and
staff to contribute to this worthy cause. Through the combined
efforts of the shaving, spraying and further donations from parents,
the College raised a total of R46,000.
Over a three period a group of staff volunteers sprayed and shaved
over 2300 learners and staff. Some of the innovative ideas for
raising funds included the auctioning off of prefects, staff and the
Rector to shave their heads. St Stithians College challenges all
schools in the area to better the contribution to fighting cancer
next year!

St Stithians Boys' College
In keeping with the importance St Stithians Boys' College places
on heritage and on acknowledging the work of former members of the
Saints Community, the College recently celebrated two historic
occasions.
The first was to commemorate Years of Headboys from 1956-2009.
The Headmaster, Mr Dave Knowles, hosted a dinner for seventeen
former Headboys as well as the four living former Headmasters: Mr
Steyn Krige 1962-1968), Mr Mark Henning (1969-1988), Mr David Wylde
(1989-1999) and Mr Ian McLachlan (1999-2006). The evening was a
celebration of the progress made by the Boys' College over the
years,
as well as an occasion for reminiscing and for giving gratitude to
the hard work of those who gave so much to the College.
Mr Ian McLachlan, Mr Mark Henning, Mr Steyn Krige, Mr David
Wylde, Mr Dave Knowles
The second occasion, equally nostalgic, was to Celebrate 21 Years
of The Duke of Cornwall Singers. Affectionately known as The
Dukes the group started in 1986 with Mrs Moira Schafer as the
Conductor, followed by Mrs Dalene Hoogenhout since 1998. Various
groups of Dukes entertained a delighted audience with a variety of
songs and at one point during the evening, there were 52 former and
current Dukes performing on the stage!
Current
Head of Dukes, Anthony Knowles & Murray Masterson Head of Dukes in
1986
Both events proved to be extremely successful and were a reminder of
the importance of tradition and of continuity in creating a strong
foundation on which the Boys' College will continue to flourish.
