BOYS' PREPARATORY - MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES

Here are some examples of how teachers at St Stithians College Boys' Preparatory School have been encouraging the learners to grow through the development of their Multiple Intelligences.

Spiritual Experience

The Chapel is the centre of St Stithians, and the Saints Honour reminds us to Honour God, Others and Ourselves. We have a full time Chaplain from the Methodist church. Each Class takes part in our connecting programme with schools in Ivory Park.

Musical Intelligence

In addition to class music, which every class receives, we also offer Choirs, Jazz Bands, Marimba Bands and at present 173 boys are learning to play various musical instruments.

Bodily-Kinaesthetic Intelligence

We are able to field 26 cricket teams, (305 games of cricket), 28 soccer teams (283 games of soccer). A further 90 internal rotational soccer games are played each season. In addition we offer swimming, diving, water polo, tennis, squash, cross-country, hockey, rugby, basketball and climbing.

Linguistic Intelligence

We are a South African School Making a World of Difference; as such we offer four languages: English as first language and Afrikaans, Zulu and Sotho. Similarly all eight learning areas enable and encourage boys to improve their Linguistic Intelligence.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

Each Grade in the Boys’ Prep has five hours of Mathematics a week. Learning Support teachers provide additional help in Mathematics. We have four Mathematics teachers per grade.

Naturalist Intelligence

As part of Environmental Awareness the classes go on various outings and tours. Grade 4 visits the Vaal River, Grade 5 visits the Northern Province, Grade 6 visit the Battlefields and Grade 7 go through a week of outdoor leadership skills. In addition to this the classes make use of the Saints environment and go on various day outings. We have set up our Dads and Lads programme which encourages fathers to arrange various outings with their sons to enjoy some of the natural wonders of South Africa.

Intra-personal Intelligence

The Life Orientation Programme is based on building self-awareness and self respect. We have a Counsellor dedicated to the Boys’ Prep. We assess the boys to make them and the teachers aware of their various learning styles. We have developed an EQ questionnaire to make boys aware of their many emotions. The Grade Seven boys all go through a Personal Development Programme aimed at educating them in the responsibilities of leadership. All staff have completed AIDS Awareness Programme.

Inter-personal Intelligence

In aiming to build a nurturing school and a nurturing community the boys go through a variety of programmes that makes them aware of the needs of others. We continue to focus on RESPECT as part of the Saints Honour in order to acknowledge and address this worldwide perennial problem of bullying. Parents are also involved in building community and do this in a number of ways.

The Dads and Lads group looks to involve more Dads in various outdoor, fun, learning activities with their sons. The Public Relations team is a group of boys who carry out PR duties in a responsible, friendly and very mature way.

Spatial/Creative intelligence

All boys are taught Art and Drama during the school day and are encouraged to explore this area of creativity.

Technological Intelligence

We have two fully equipped computer lab for the boys. All boys learn Design and Technology from one of the leading DT teachers in the country. The Grade Sevens complete Science Projects which are displayed. We continue to make use of the Science kits; a South African based technology initiative.

Financial Intelligence

All Grades are taught a variety of entrepreneurial skills. Every year our Grade 6 boys participate in the Game of Life; a fascinating simulation of the development of community and business enterprise.
