GRADE R

Grade R Special Persons Day.  The Grade R’s invited their special people to a little show in order to honour those who are not always included in the school events.  The many grandparents, aunts and uncles and helpers who attended saw the children in action in their classrooms.  A wonderful tea was laid on in the Junior Prep Hall which was greatly appreciated!  The children were delighted to show off their prowess and a wonderful morning was had by all.

We are "Bulding a Bafana" over the last four Fridays of this term starting with soccer socks, shirts, shorts and then headgear.  The children are enjoying learning about the various overseas teams and embracing the excitement around the 2010 World Cup.  They look wonderful in their yellow Bafana shirts!

The Grade R's are having a busy time in May.  We sang beautifully in our special Chapel service in "Celebration of our Parents".

Term Two has started with great excitement.  Our Dinosaur theme has come at a time when a volcano is erupting and great clouds of ash are disrupting air travel worldwide.  The children are able to see the effect a volcano has on the world and then consider the extreme effects a meteor would have had on the world of the dinosaurs.

As World cup fever seizes the nation, the Grade R learners will learn about all the countries that will be participating in 2010.  As the countdown continues, the children will ‘Build a Bafana’ until each child is a fully kitted out World Cup soccer player

2010 is here at last!  The corridors of Grade R were filled with excited children and apprehensive parents as school commenced last week.  Finding new friends, classrooms and teachers was challenging!  It is encouraging to see how well the children have settled into school routine.  The parents will hear more about St Stithians at a series of parent evenings to be held this term.  This allows the parents the opportunity to get to know the teachers as well as the other parents.  The Grade R teachers and helpers look forward to a year filled with laughter and learning!

GRADE ONE

Grade 1 Celebrate our Parents Service. The moms and dads enjoyed a morning of songs and poems presented by the Grade One classes. Moms and dads, we LOVE you for always putting up with our noise, outbursts and occasional eruptions!  We wish you a Happy Mother’s and Father’s Day.  Love from all of us.

Hot chocolate is great but it's even better with a good story!  The Grade One's enjoyed listening to stories read to them by their teachers last Friday 30 April 2010.

The Grade One classes enjoy helping out!  This year the Grade One outreach is aimed at “meals on wheels”.  The children have donated bread, jam and peanut butter and have enjoyed making sandwiches which are then distributed through “meals on wheels” to the needy.

The Grade One's are so excited on their first day of school.  They welcome each other with bright smiles and hugs.  The first day is full of laughter and sharing of thrilling holiday stories.  The start to 2010 has been a great one!

GRADE TWO

Grade 2 Beetle drive - 3 June 2010.  Grade 2 celebrated the World Cup by having a Bafana Beetle Drive. Mears Hall was packed with over 300 people and fun was had by parents and children! Families enjoyed a picnic supper and then played some Bafana Bingo. Shouts of ‘Ayoba’ filled the hall!  Families were asked to bring a blanket for the poor. 45 Blankets were collected and delivered to Hope Zone on Friday. ‘Hope Zone’ works in under resourced communities and will donate the blankets to the elderly who come to their soup kitchen.

On Wednesday the 26th May, Grade 2R,P and T went on an outing to Sci Bono. The children enjoyed looking at all the wonderful displays, building a house and seeing the dinosaurs. A very big thank you to all the parents who assisted with lifts.

On Friday the 7th May, the Grade 2s held a special Celebrating Parents Service in the Chapel. The choir sang a carpenters medley and the Grade 2s performed a number of songs and presented the following poem. We hope that all the parents enjoyed the morning just as much as the Grade 2s did.

Dear Mom and Dad

SOMEDAY

When we are all grown up…

The house will be free of graffiti

There will be no crayoned smiley faces on the walls,

No names scrawled in the furniture dust

No pictures fingered on dad’s steamy car windows

Or our names written on the doors,

SOMEDAY

When we are all grown up…

You will get through a whole chapter of an exciting book Or read the Sunday Time without being interrupted

To listen to “When are we going to eat”

Or I am hungry

Or I am bored

SOMEDAY

You will not find missing stacking cups under the beds,

Lots of toilet paper draped in the bath

Or lots of sand in our hair or denim jeans

You will be able to find a pencil somewhere in the house

You will be able to ride in a car without anyone asking

Are we there yet?

SOMEDAY

You will breeze right past the sweets in the supermarket without any interruptions

You will stroll freely pass the toy sections

You will be able to choose cereals without checking what noise it makes, what prize it contains or what colour it comes in.

SOMEDAY

You will be able to prepare liver and onions and no one will say ‘Yuk! I wish we were having McDonalds.

Or Jimmy is so lucky his parents let him eat chocolate bars for dinner.

We can eat by candle light, with no-one trying to roast their food over the flame

Or arguing about who gets to blow out the candles

SOMEDAY

You will get ready for your bath without first having to take out a fleet of boats, two rubber sharks and a soggy tennis ball from the bath

You will relax in a hot, steamy bath with lots of bubbles for a whole hour

No-one will bang on the door, “Hurry up, Mommy, I gotta go!

Yes someday life will be different when we’re all grown up

Then it will be yesterday!  LOTS OF LOVE AND KISSES FROM ALL OF US

The Grade 2's are currently learning about newspapers. They have been learning about the different sections of the paper such as weather, classifieds, cartoons, advertisements, headlines and cartoons. Much fun was had by the learners when cutting up and researching each section.

The Grade Two children settled down well in their new classes and have been very busy. We have a few new children in our Grade and would like to welcome them to the Saints family.

MISCELLANEOUS

The Paw Print Club enjoyed a wonderful outing to the Nash's Farm. The Paw Printers and their families enjoyed a game drive, an energetic walk along the river banks, kyaking, swimming and cliff jumping.

GRADE R

Grade R Sports Day

Grade R held their annual sports day just before the half term weekend.  As always the focus was on participation, enjoyment and the learning of basic athletic skills.  The children's excitement was at fever pitch and the morning was a great success!  The parents' races were a fitting finale and it was quite apparent where our children get their talent!

Grade R Concert

The Grade R's showcased their talents in a production of 'Jozi, our Jozi!'.  Our diverse and dynamic city was brought to life by the children who sang, danced and recited poetry for their parents.  Putting together a show for over 160 Grade R children is no mean feat!  Congratulations to Mrs. Harrington and all the children!

GRADE ONE

Sports' Stacking:

Sports’ stacking is amazing!  The children in Grade One had a fabulous time stacking cups.  Sports’ stacking is not just loads of fun but helps with, the development of motor skills, promotes eye hand coordination, improves dexterity and quickness, increases focus and concentration and improves self image.  The children were so enthusiastic and quick to learn this new skill.  We can't wait to try it again!

Literacy week:

The Junior Primary has been abuzz with Literacy week. The children were treated to a show by Hooked on Books on Tuesday the 15th July. The stories are acted out with involvement from the children. They loved all the books but are firm favourites of ‘The Very Smelly Zoo’ and ‘Pretty Salma’ by Niki Daly.

During the week the children also got to bring their teddy bear to school for a Teddy Bears’ picnic. They read their favourite story to their bear and enjoyed a picnic with their friends.

In each class the children were exposed to different children’s authors. They have enjoyed reading books by authors like Niki Daly, Kevin Henkes and Quintin Blake. They have also completed numerous activities around these authors and illustrators.

Pyjama day:

Friday the 18th July was pyjama day. The Junior Primary came to school in their pyjamas and spent an exciting morning drinking hot chocolate and reading to their friends from their most beloved books. The highlight of the morning was that many teachers were also dressed in their pyjamas!

Outing to the Farm Yard:

What a fun time we had at The Farm Yard! The children were taken around the farm by two guides. They were introduced to a prickly porcupine family. The children also experienced the milking of cows by hand. They were allowed to feed many of the farm animals the vegetables that they brought along. The pigs, horses and ponies really enjoyed the morning feast!
The J.P has had a busy second term!  On the 31st May the Grade Ones exercised their legs around the Wayne Joubert Oval for the Big Walk!  Parents and children enjoyed a sunny morning together.

World Environment Day:

Our children loved giving trees a big hug for World Environment Day!  They have learnt all about nature conservation and the impact it has on the future world.

Founders Day:

Founders Day was celebrated on the 5th June across campus.  The junior choir performed beautifully and left the parents with goose bumps!  The JP felt privileged to be included with the entire college.

Grades Sports Day:

Ready, Steady, GO!

The Grade One Sports Day was off to a good start, thanks to Mrs Barbara Richards!  She prepared the children for all the events, including hurdles, long jump and even high jump.  The children moved smoothly between the events and were so excited to see their moms and dads running in the parents races!  Everyone enjoyed the morning and the children left school feeling happy but exhausted

Grade One Camp Out:

The Grade One camp out was a HUGE success! The children were really excited to spend the evening with their dads camping under the stars. The dads were also treated to a sing a long and then went off to braai. Many new friendships were built on this evening and dads and children will talk about this experience for years to come!

Outing to the Zoo:

The Grade One children so enjoyed their outing to the zoo!  They sang festive songs on the bus ride to Johannesburg Zoo and could not wait to see their favourite animals.  The zoo provided tractors and trailers for children and teachers.  The children also learnt about the history of the zoo from the wonderful guides and one of the highlights was walking around the old, empty and very tiny lion enclosures. It was a wonderful educational experience!

Celebrate our Parents Chapel:

The children moved their Parents to tears at the Celebrate our Parents Day Chapel service.  The JP celebrated with prayers, songs and poems for their dads.  Parents you are so special!

My First Day in Grade One
I am nervous
I try to smile.
It feels like I have run a mile.
I get to school
Wow, my teacher's cool.
I see my old friends
And make new ones too!
I tell about my weekend,
I paint and even learn to tie my shoes!
Now everyone can see
This is ME, and my first day at school.

A short poem compiled by the Gr1W class and their teacher. It is all about their first day at school

GRADE 2

Celebrating Mothers and Fathers

Mothers' and Fathers' days were celebrated in a joint Chapel Service to thank our wonderful parents for all they do.

Adventure Day

Great fun was had by all with boot camp, climbing walls, jumping castles and sporting activities.

Medieval feast

The Grade twos ended off their medieval theme with a wonderful feast of meatballs, chicken and rolls. All the children dressed up in their medieval costumes and a wonderful time was had by all in the woods.

Treatshop

On Friday the 23 October, Grade Twos held their treat shop. Thank you to all the classes that supplied the goodies.
Wonderful entrepreneurial and advertising skills were used to entice potential "clients".

Miscellaneous:

Paw-Print:

The Paw prints ended their theme of early man and the environment with an amazing visit to the Nash's farm. The young Eco Saints and their families went on game drives, visited caves where they had a lecture on the early inhabitants of the area and paddled in the stream.

Hooked on Books:

The Grade One's were wowed by the performers from "Hooked on Books".  They were introduced to books with amazing tiles, like Professor Puffendorf's Secret Potions.  They left the hall wanting to read, read and read and to go out and buy all the books!

Friendship Day:

Love is ... giving roses, chocolates and lots of hugs! Grade One dressed in pink, red and white on friendship day. The children had a special time of sharing and laughing with their friends and teachers.

Grade 2 and 6 Pen pal Buddy Picnic

On the 5th of November the Grade 2s got to meet their pen pal buddy in Grade 6. The children all brought a wonderful picnic to share and a most enjoyable time was had by all.

2009

Grade R : Animals in Distress

Animals in Distress visited our Grade R's and gave them an informative lesson on how to look after their animals. The Grade R's have been very active in fund raising for this worthwhile charity.

Grade 1 : Old age home

Grade 2 : Vuleka school

Grade Two outreach for 2009 is Vuleka School in Randburg. The Saints learners will all have an opportunity to visit the school and at the end of the year we are hosting a party for the children from Vuleka at our school.  We are trying to foster a relationship with the Vuleka children instead of just doing collections for them. The classes that have already visited have learned a lot.

On Thursday the 22 October, Grade 2 R and N went to visit Vuleka. A wonderful time was had by all. The children enjoyed skipping and reading as well as playing with inflatable balls kindly donated by Mr. Holloway. A very big thank you to all the Moms who assisted with transport.
