David Ng, Grade 10 Mountstephens, was invited to perform with the Rand Symphony Orchestra – for the THIRD time. He was one of eleven young soloists who played in the specially arranged Youth Concert, under the direction of Mr Bernard Wozny.

David played Beethoven’s Concerto in C-Major, 1st movement. The audience was enthralled by David’s piano playing and gave him a rapturous applause.  The compere singled out David, by saying “THIS YOUNG MAN WILL GO FAR” to which the audience applauded again.

David is an outstanding ambassador for the Boys’ College.

The induction
The induction of St Stithians Boys’ College  2010 Prefects was held on Friday 15 January during Chapel and, as always, it was a solemn and deeply moving occasion. This ceremony is a representation of the ethos of Serving Leadership at the Boys’ College, and is symbolised by the Head Boy and his Deputy washing the feet of two grade 8 students.

RUGBY

Congratulations and many thanks for your efforts this weekend.
The rugby that was on display across the school was of a high standard and I'll think you will agree, the atmosphere and 'Matchday Experience' that is starting to develop is creating a real vibe around the rugby fields.
This week we host Swartkops High School, a co-ed institution from Centurion - they play St Albans.

St Stithians Boys' College vs Pretoria Boys' High School

Rugby
Saints scored 4 quick tries to be 28-0 up after 20 mins with no reply from PBHS. PBHS come back to score 2 tries in quick succession to make the half time score  31-14 to saints. This was much to the delight of the spectators who could not believe what they were witnessing. PBHS started the half strongly and were the first to score after half time, PBHS scored a further 3 tries and Saints could only reply with 1. This provided a nail biting finish with Saints coming out tops with a final score of 39-35.
Points scored by:
Luca Dalle Ave 2 tries
Nkuli Gamede 1 try
Matthew Lawrence 1 try
Sean Sanders 1
Morgan Ferguson 4 conversions and 2 penalties.

Hockey
After a hiatus of a couple of years owing to mix ups with central fixture arrangements, this was an eagerly awaited match. PBHS is always a challenging team to play owing to their disciplined, attacking mode of play. To achieve anything in the way of a result would required a defensive effort of the highest order. The Saints 1st Team played exceptionally well in a game that offered few chances to capitalise. Indeed, it was only at the end of the first half that a circle-entry was a achieved which resulted in a scrambled goal by Mark Tatham. The second half saw more of the same; a defensive pattern that refused to yield to wave after wave of attack. In the end one goal was enough to win the day and the Saints were good value for the victory.

During the April holidays enthusiastic Drama Staff and students were able to meet Oscar winning director Gavin Hood who was in South Africa to promote “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, the highly acclaimed movie starring Hugh Jackman. Gavin was Headboy of St Stithians in 1980 and he has been an inspiration to the students with films he has made, but even more so since “Tsotsi’s” Oscar win in 2006. It was a wonderful opportunity to welcome him back to St Stithians to show him how drama has changed since he was at the Boys’ College, where it is now a fully fledged Academic subject.

Gavin was extremely generous with his time and shared his expertise in a most down-to-earth and friendly manner. Needless to say the audience hung on every word he said and when asked who his mentor had been at school, with no hesitation, Gavin was able to say “I owe it all to my English teacher, Mr Michael Stalley”. Mr Stalley is a former Deputy Headmaster of St Stithians Boys’ College and Director of Drama.

He was Gavin Hood's English teacher for three years up to Matric. He remembers Gavin as being a young man of expansive vision with a strongly developed ability to think laterally and to ask all the right questions. No push-over, Gavin was never shy to express his own opinions on literature and drama. When chosen for leading roles in the College's major drama productions worked tirelessly to become the role he was playing and was always successful. This linked to his intelligent interpretation of scripts and his easy ability to write essays, was a wonderful preparation for the career which he knew would eventually became his major passion.

Mr Stalley first noticed Gavin in a Prep School performance of Oliver, where he had a comedy character minor role. Two years later Gavin was asked if he would like to play Lady Macbeth in the College's annual production. A few days before opening night he came to Mr Stalley, script in hand, and expressed severe reservations about his ability to carry off the role. His Director's argument was no match for even Gavin and so he gave him back is script which was accompanied by him quipping that if his Director thought could do it, then he would. The audience gave him a great ovation as he left the stage after delivering his final lines. Gavin later went on to play John Proctor in The Crucible and the 8th Jury Man in Twelve Angry Men, both very strong and vigorous roles and each questioning norms within society.

Gavin had, reflects Mr Stalley, a wonderful ability to see the big picture. His chairmanship of the Matric Dance Committee ensured that the whole occasion was one of sophisticated style and meticulous attention to detail. Its theme was New York.

Of course his consistent leadership potential led him to be Headboy in 1980. Gavin was an all-rounder: an excellent public speaker and debater, a top academic and played 1st XV Rugby, was Captain of Boats Rowing and a keen athlete.

His parents, Gordon and Di were always supportive of his acting but felt it better for him to have a degree to his name before pursuing a career in acting or film direction. After completing a B.Comm. degree and then an LLB degree at the University of the Witwatersrand, he visited his ‘mentor’ to tell him that Acting and Directing was still flowing with considerable force through his blood stream and over coffee had a lengthy chat about his future. Gavin had always hoped practicing law would be a bit like the life in “LA Law’ and after a stint with a local law firm changed his mind. Once again Mr Stalley was able to persuade Gavin that it would be a good idea for him to follow his dream – and the rest they say is history!

Gavin now has an even more important role: that of Dad to twins Cade and Chloe! St Stithians College is extremely proud of what he has achieved since leaving school.

 Frozen in Time

The meaning behind my artwork is that the picture within the ice is a voice trying to communicate with someone else but the ice is trapping it keeping it blocked from communicating with other people or objects. The ice acts as another person in this artwork and the communication takes place between the photo and the ice. This relates to our theme of 'In Dialogue'.

Another concept that I wanted to achieve was history being frozen in time, the voice or image in this case will stay frozen in time and theoretically be there forever. When the ice starts to melt the voice will eventually start to come out and be heard until it falls onto the ground and the artwork soon becomes nothing. The voice has disappeared. The affect of the voice and artwork being lost or gone can be achieved because this is an instillation piece.

International School's Tournament

St Stithians Boys’ College recently participated as one of thirty-six schools in the annual St John’s College International School's Tournament, played at Sun City.  All the of South Africa’s top golfing schools were there as well as schools from Zimbabwe and Great Britain.  The Boys’ College was represented by Nicholas Scher (Captain Gr 11), Luke Hollis (Gr 11) Jonathan Dixon (Gr 9) and Haydn Porteous (Gr 8). The tournament was played over four days and after day 1 the Saints team was in 5th position; after day 2 in 2nd position, to take the lead on day 3, by one stroke.  On the final day Saints was tied first, but on a count-out was placed 2nd
The standard of play was incredibly high this year. Both teams placed first (Saints and KES), played 12 shots better than any school has managed in the past.

St Stithians was not out of the prizes: Haydn Porteous posted the best individual score on the final day.  Jonathan Dixon played solid golf throughout the tournament and he and Haydn posted 5-under and 4-under in the Betterball, competition.  The two eagles that Luke Hollis produced and the fighting spirit of the captain, Nic Scher, contributed greatly to the success of the team.  The boys were excellent ambassadors for St Stithians when the going got tough and displayed true sportsmanship.

We are indeed proud of them.
Haydn Porteous has just won the U16 World Golf Championships in Italy

Mr Koji Katsuta past student's exhibition
Dear Friends,

We are sending this e-mail with profound thanks and gratitude to your school where our beloved late Mr Koji Katsuta studied and developed his artistic talent. We are the parents (now living in Tokyo, Japan) of the late Mr Koji Katsuta who studied at St Stithians College between 1889-1992 where he started to develop his talent for art. It is a happy and good memory that the late Mr Koji Katsuta could have been provided with the opportunity of studying at your school, particularly so in the sense that his artistic talent was developed and enhanced with generous and proper guidance by his teachers and friends.

We are not sure now that whether the wall painting at dormitory's dining room is still there or not, but if it is still there, the design was initiated by our  beloved Koji Katsuta and it was elected by the school. Koji Katsuta with the help and work by many friends created it during the school holiday. After he left St Stithians, he joined an art school in Tokyo, but left for New York to satisfy his thirsty for art and enhance his talent at a more professional institute in New York. After graduation, he worked for design institutes while he simultaneously pursed his own way for satisfying his thirst for art and also enhancing his talent in his own manner, but passed away at the age of 31.

Left in the dark abyss and deep sorrow, we pondered over what we can best offer him, and eventually we thought that his soul might be consoled by holding his art exhibition
in New York
where he had many friends with whom he studied together, cheered up together, enjoyed friendship, and having been helped by . It is our sincere wish that this invitation to the art exhibition could be forwarded to:
*All students at your school
*all teachers and friends
*those people as referred to below with whom Mr Koji Katsuta owed much for his happy school life (if they are contactable) ;
Mr /Mrs D B Wylde - then active headmaster (who made a trip Japan after we left SA and stayed at our  house to have interview with headmasters of primary /junior /senior high school and also university for facing different way of education)
Mr/Mrs Marilyn Brink (mathematics teacher); Mr Keet (tennis coach teacher); Mrs Margaret Hope (teacher for art ); Mr Michael D Stalley (then active vice head master); Mr Koji Katsuta's schoolmates.

It is our cherished desire that, if at all possible, some of you and some of our gratifying people may kindly visit the exhibition, or you may kindly make a call to any friends or residents nearby in NY.

N.B.: Mr Yuzo Katsuta and Mrs Junko Katsuta stayed in JHB for about 12 years between 1989 and 2001.

With sincere wishes and gratitude,
Junko Katsuta
