SAINTS TRINITY: THE DUKES

Medium: Cement (1m high)

A project, by the Art Department, is the creation and installation of three figures in the main quad area of the Boys' College. Currently the figures are nearing completion and we hope for the installation by the Second Term.

The artwork was commissioned by Dave Knowles as part of a monument that would celebrate a sense of spirituality, community and self pride.

The artwork has been modelled directly in cement and depicts three students who appear in the guise of Dukes singing up to heaven.

The Art Master, Michael Matthews, states of this work: "The three figures are involved in a common activity that represents a sense of 'umbuntu' - the three figures are in the act of singing and praising. I have distorted the figures to emphasis their spirituality, purposely bending the figures necks until their faces are parallel to the ground. The central figure wears a traditional 'basher' that functions visually as a halo".
